Ah.. look its superman !!!

I see a 5 year old kid shouting in sathyam , looking at the posters of the movie "The Dark Knight", and i just smile it off. Cute kid. I see a 25 year old gawking at the same poster and i am thinking, "alright, this is no sleazy chick poster, so this guy must've been a good fan of batman in his younger days". And then I see a 50 year old enquiring at the ticket counter about the movies release and i am asking myself ,"Batman!! Really ??!! " .
Guys have this strange attaction towards the superhero movies. Atleast MOST of them i know do. Guess this is one common liking that they seem to inherit from their forefathers. And i have always been quite curious to know what is it about these comic book turned hollywood superheros/movies they like. Sadly, all the answers that i seem to get from them would be
"I like super/spider/bat man. Whats not to like ?"
"Well, They are our childhood heros. ( Sounds more to me like "fantasies" than "heros" :-) !! )"
"Comic books were okay. Movies are cool."
"Dont bother. You are a girl."
etc etc ...
It is interesting though, how these so called tough, macho, young,'I'm cool' breed of men actually think some random guy flying in the sky with zero fashion awareness would glide away to catch a falling aeroplane and land it safe. These are the very guys who you usually find reviewing movies like Harry potter's and Star Trek's and Enchanted and the likes of disney productions. According to them, its fine when a 30 something man with his underwear's worn out bashes a 100 million bad guys and saves the world but its virtually a crime watching a boy on his broomstick bring out magic of a wand. Yeah, It must be really hard to like Harry potter !!
And guys, before you blare about the fact that there ARE so many girls out there who do like catching up on these superhero movies, let me give you a piece of wisdom - believe me its got squat to do with saving the world or the superhero stunts. Its either mostly the man who plays the hero or the unique act of impressing their beau by showing off their "I like what you like" attitude. *smiles*
Well, I do realise that i have already wounded a lot of "manly" hearts out there by writing this stuff about superman or spidey or watever. But i had to do what i did because i was just SO shocked to see a #1 place for the recent batman release "The Dark Knight" in imdb. I am a great fan of the site ,owing to its remarkable reviews and synopsis and ratings of the movies. I do not approve of the fact that a movie that is mostly liked and relished by only a section of the people should be considered for the top spot irrespective of the fact that the movie is incredibly brilliant. A 25,000 vote count doesn't decide the best is all i'm trying to say. Peace.

Why did you have to write such condescending words about Superman? Why of all the superheroes you had to put title with superman? You could have mentioned “Ah... Look its Batman” because he really isn’t a superhero; Just a rich kid with cool gadgets.

Anyways for the start I haven’t watch Dark Knight yet but what I hear till now it’s been a well made movie. And it is not so because it’s Batman but so because it does have good direction, well scripted plot and amazing acting by both the actors Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. I just can’t wait to get into the theatre to get a glimpse of this movie.

Secondly I a Pro-Superman guy but I do like the Disney Movies and movies like Enchanted (not Harry Porter – NEVER till I die). I think one good explanation why the guys like Superheroes, is the whole idea that there could exist a person more just a simple man; more than just mere ordinary day to today guy with a secret and more fascination life in the shadows. This is happens more in case of Superman as he is a one of the most recognised Alien superhero who could live among Humans (biggest secret identify among heroes).

There is actually a whole documentary titled “The science of Superman” which main give a nice insight on how Clark Kent can be Superman (Scientifically) and second part talks about why people are fascinated by Superheroes.
It’s hard to convince a Harry Porter fan that Superman is better or Vice versa. So just take a look at the documentary and get back to me. I could write more but this section say COMMENTS only...

~Cheers~

Hey deepika
its a nice post.
but as a " guy" i completely disagree u on the foll posts.

1)batman movies u had seen is those comic movies called "batman and Robin"
This Dark Knight is a sequel to Batman Begins , which actually doesnt talk abt the super powers of Batman.
It talks about destiny,to pursue a dream and achieve something. This is not a super hero movie , and completely diff from spiderman or superman.

2) Dark Knight has 48000 votes now ,and not jus 22k votes.

3) The crucial reason behind its success is Christopher Nolan , the director whos famous for Prestige,Memento etc.

4)the movie is technically brilliant, amazing dialogues, breath taking grapics and action
5) u have to give it to the Joker (Heath Ledger).simply superb acting

I really dont blame u , cos the posters show u a batman pic, but lil do they know its the otherwise.

When i posted the blog, the vote count was 25 k :-)
And yeah i have been hearing a lot about the movie's technical brilliance.. As a matter of fact, i'm planning on watching the movie myself (As opposed to the fact that i never watch superhero movies)
But you have to agree, IF the same director used the same cast minus the BATMAN tag he'd have still received such good reviews (considering his story and screenplay is as powerful as is said ) but things were chosen otherwise... Simply because its Batman ... At the end of the day, It's still a superhero tale.. :-)

Interesting view point on why mainly guys like the movie and want to see it so badly. When I was at the theater, the guy's girlfriend sitting in front of me actually got bored and wanted to leave before the movie got over. I was like WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU??(in my head). I couldn't understand what was boring, probably because I have a permanent low reserve of estrogen.

I do not know what poster is at sathyam, but the "Why so serious?" posters here, is enough to avert your eyes off the road and get you a traffic violation ticket on the way back from work. It’s the dark theme. Guys like black, The Devil, The Netherworld, supercars and women (Most probably in that order).Unless you're one of those goth girls I know, you can most possibly never like the poster. Also, it’s pretty stereotypical for women in that they don't know, that there are things in this world more beautiful them. For example, if I had Kiera Knightly next to Bruce Wayne's LP640, I'd personally get into the latter. That doesn't mean I never would want to get into Knightly. Unless you're in heaven or Vegas you're never going to get both at the same time. So, facing reality I say this:'It’g going to be the car with most guys as long as there are Italians making them more erotic everyday.'
However, I do agree with you on certain opinions. I completely don't understand why guys think that watching Harry Potter movies is girly. It's got everything a movie needs. Take your girlfriend to it and while she watches it, you pay all your attention to her. It's a win-win situation. You can tell your friends you didn't actually watch it and your girlfriend is happy for all the attention she got even though, you paid 30 bucks for the tickets.

Nevertheless, I've read all the books and didn't find anything that someone will dislike. But the movies were nothing like the books and they were as accurate as a two-year-old's rendering of the Sistine chapel.

I was never a super hero admirer. In fact my favorite show was "Bill Nye The Science Guy". (Google that and you'll know how less a kid can get geekier). I never liked the 90's batman movies. The first super hero movie that I really liked was Spiderman-1 and that was completely because of Dunst and nothing else. Nevertheless, I did watch Batman Begins and was blown away. I was actually scared before watching it, since Batman and Robin made me vomit my lunch from kindergarden. Before BB I hadn't known who Nolan was. The movie was good not because of batman, but because of the new approach. The batman was rightly portrayed as the anti-hero hero and not some dude driving a corvette in dark alleys and wearing his underwear on the outside so that he can avoid wedgies while jumping atop buildings. (I am not sure if you know, but wedgies can be a real inhibitor while running fast). The movie had me glued to it all the way till the very end, and I hadn’t realized I’d seen a batman movie till my friend was pissed with me and said “All guys are the same with their stupid super hero idols.”(I’m just playing.. she didn’t say that!). In addition, the joker's part was played with the right sense, scary and maniacal.

Even though the count is up to 69000, and probably increasing as I type this, I too cannot decipher why its #1 so quickly? May be another viewing would bring more realization?

Niranjan has pretty much said everything that needs to be said.

What is it that you admire in Harry Pottar? The boundless imagination? Rowling's exemplary writing skills? The joyous triumph of good over evil? The Magic?

Well, I don't see how much is it different in a superhero movie. The only difference being here it is comic, graphic novelistic fun and with HP, it's a fantasy novel.

I love the comic/superhero/nolan movies as much as I do Harry Potter. All your opinions made sense to me except for that generalization you made.

And about Dark Knight on #1, am not sure either. It definitely is Top 25 but #1 is pushing it. One explanation is, Godfather was cult after the movie came. Batman has always been a cult. DC/Marvel comics have always been. So it is probably a planned execution by some really ardent Batman fans. I am guessing this because I once received a forward to vote for Rang De Basanti to push it into IMDB Top 250.

Drifting a lil away from Dark Night, when you can see Hancock(guys she's a die hard Will Smith fan, note it) on the first day of its release, then u obv cant say a few points tat u mentioned. Hancock is yet another 'super hero' tale..rather more than a superhero tale! and when I 'commented' on the movie u said 'hey its just fun to watch. tat s enuf'. @Niranjan
Well, That was some piece of information about Bruce Wayne's LP640 ( or "Whuatever! :-)" ) !!!

@Gradwolf
Some of you like Harry PottER, Good. And as you say, Nothing much is differnt about Rowling's boy and these superheros... Its all the same.. Fantasy/Heroics/Comics!
But do you really think every guy would show as much interest in Harry potter than their famous favorite hunks... And are you trying to tell me that every guy who accidently does like Harry Potter is ready to confess to his 'guy' friends that he likes 'em.. Nah, i dont think so..

That's why the generalization ! :-)

PS:- I don't hate superhero's. Am just asking why guys LOVE them. :-)

Well, I don't know why you need to bring "accidentally like" and "confess" over there. My friends and I discuss HP with each other and with other girls too. We've been to the movies together. And if you have doubts, I am 23. There was a time in England when adults read HP behind their newspapers (because it was a "children s" book). But people grew out of it.
